OAXACA

It has been noted that national and international attention on Chiapas and its armed conflict has succeeded in decreasing direct violence and in generating pressure on the state and federal governments about the political cost of repression and its deaths. But while this concern has been focused on Chiapas, in other states, such as Oaxaca and Guerrero, social, campesino and indigenous organizations have continued to suffer threats, violence and militarization without many voices denouncing these crimes, leaving the door open to political impunity.

The same structural causes which provoked the uprising of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) in Chiapas are also present in Oaxaca : the lack of basic social and economic rights such as housing, education and health care, along with the discrimination and racism cultivated throughout centuries of internal and external colonialism.

For these reasons, since 2004, SIPAZ has expanded its work to include Oaxaca. This work is carried out primarily through the monitoring of information, periodic visits and exchanges with organizations and movements in the state.
