San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chiapas, México 3rd of May 2004 International Service for Peace (SIPAZ) would like to share with you its concern about the recent assassination of Noel Pável Gonzáles, a student at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and at the National School of Anthropology and History. He was found hung in an isolated location in Mexico City. He was missing since April 19, 2004 and was found dead on Saturday, April 24. The forensic report states that Noel Pável died due to injuries and a fracture to his skull after being raped, tortured and beaten. Noel Pável worked voluntarily with the “Smaliyel Co-operative” which commercializes coffee produced in the Zapatista Autonomous Municipalities of Chiapas. Last week some of Pável’s friends, who also study at the UNAM, received an e-mail with the following message: “ Against these fucking Zapatistas. You stop your solidarity work or what follows will be apocalyptic. With your coffee or your ridiculous caravans (here were written the names of a number of students). Follow those fucking Zapatistas and you will see what happen. Without sender. What is missing is the video”. The e-mail was signed “Yunque”, which a well-known ultra right-wing group in Mexico. The signature, as well as the threat to Pável’s friends demonstrates that there is a political motive for the assassination of this student. We are extremely concerned about this brutal assassination because of the way it was done and because of the motives behind it. This represents an attack to persons who accompany the Zapatista movement in a pacifist and civil way. We share the sorrow of Noél Pável’s family and we are very concerned for the safety of all his threatened friends. We ask the international civil society to send letters to the federal and state authorities asking to:
