Your Excellency,

We have learned of the brutal assassination of Noél Pavél Gonzalés, who was found hung in Mexico City with clear signs of rape, torture and physical injuries on April 24, 2004.

This student was working as a volunteer with the “Smaliyel Co-operative” which commercializes coffee from the Zapatista autonomous municipalities in Chiapas.

We also have taken notice that a few days after the murder, Noel’s friends from the university (UNAM) received an e-mail threatening them for their relation with the Zapatista movement:

“ Against these fucking Zapatistas. You stop your solidarity work or what follows will be Apocalyptic. With your coffee, or your ridiculous caravans (here were written the names of a number of students). Follow those fucking Zapatistas and you will see what happen. Without sender. Without video.”

It is unacceptable and contemptible for a student to be assassinated because of his relation with the Zapatista movement, moreover because his work was through civil channels and peaceful means, and because he sought to build a society based on justice and equality. We are also extremely concerned about his friends at the university who received this threat.

We ask you to do everything that is in your power to:

• Investigate this case and bring to justice the people responsible for the assassination of Noél Pavél as well as for the threat to the other students of the University UNAM.
• Guarantee the safety of the threatened students during the investigation of the facts.
• Guarantee freedom of political participation and association.

Sr. Presidente

Hemos tenido conocimiento del atroz asesinato de Noél Pavél González, quien apareció ahorcado en la Ciudad de México y con signos visibles de haber sido violado, torturado y maltratado físicamente, el pasado 24 de abril.

El joven estudiante participaba de forma solidaria en la cooperativa Smaliyel, donde se comercializa café producido por municipios autónomos zapatistas del estado de Chiapas.

También hemos sabido que días después de su asesinato, compañeros suyos de la UNAM recibieron un correo electrónico donde se les amenazaba por su vinculación con el movimiento zapatista:

“ En contra de esos pinches zapatistas. O se alejan o sigue Apocalipsis. Los del café, los de las ridículas caravanas (y el nombre de varios estudiantes). Sigan de pinches zapatistas y ya verán. Sin remitente, falta el vídeo.”

Nos resulta indignante el asesinato de este joven, debido a su vinculación con el movimiento zapatista, mucho más cuando realizaba una acción solidaria civil y pacífica, en busca de la transformación de una sociedad más justa y equitativa. Así mismo nos preocupan enormemente las amenazas bajo las que se mantienen otros compañeros estudiantes de la UNAM.

Les pedimos realicen todas las acciones que estén a su alcance para:

• Investigar estos hechos y juzgar a los responsables del asesinato de Noel Pavél González, así como de las amenazas sufridas por otros estudiantes de la UNAM.
• Garantizar la integridad física de los estudiantes amenazados mientras se resuelve la investigación de los hechos.
• Garantizar la libre participación política y asociativa.
